Airedale Terriers - General Description
Airedale Terriers were originally known as Waterside Terriers or Bingley Terriers. They were developed in Yorkshire, England and named after the Valley of Aire. Developed by crossing the English black and tan terrier with the Otterhound, they were used as small and big game hunters, police dogs and they were one of the first dogs to be recruited by the British Army in World War I, and were used as guards and messengers in the trenches of Flanders. Today the "King of Terriers" is used primarily as companion dogs, but there are still working lines present.
The Airedale Terrier is a large terrier with a long, flat skull, long shoulders and a coarse, wiry coat. The coat is dense and hard and covers the body and legs of the dog. The undercoat should be shorter and softer. The Airedales back should be level, short and strong. They stand square and should have very straight front legs. Their tail should not curl up over the back, but be carried gaily. Often times Airedales have docked tails. There nose is black and ears are v-shaped and point forward and to the side somewhat. The coat of the Airedale should be tan with black or dark grizzle and a trace of red is acceptable in the black. Certain types of terriers have a characteristic small white blaze on the chest. Airedale Terriers are muscular, sturdy, well-balanced and very active dogs that make wonderful family pets and show dogs.
