Their coat is double and it is very harsh and wiry lying closely to the body. The undercoat is shorter and denser. They were used to hunt otters and they were deliberately crossbred with the otter hound that is why their coat is waterproof.

These are very smart and easy trainable dogs that weigh about 40-50 pounds and may be 23–24 inches high. They are intelligent, faithful, playful, and also good guards. Their life expectancy is about 10-13 years and they need a lot of training, both mental and physical. Airedale photos may be obtained in rescues or from a kennel where you are buying a puppy.
