Airedale Terrier Picture

In the Airedale Terrier picture, you’ll see the largest of all terriers, often named “the king of terriers.” The height of male Airedale Terriers varies between 22 and 24 inches at the withers; females are 1-2 inches smaller than males. The weight of males is 50-65 pounds, while bitches weigh 40-45 pounds. This breed is well-balanced and square, with long straight legs, deep chest and a level topline. The Airedale Terrier is characterized by a long flat head with little difference between the length of the face and the skull. The stop in the Airedale Terrier is slightly visible, which makes the head look square; the cheeks are level; the forehead is free from wrinkles. The ears in these dogs should be V-shaped and folded. The eyes are small, deeply set, dark in color and full of typical terrier expression of intelligence and keenness. A scissors bite is preferred in Airedale Terriers.

The body of a high quality dog of this breed, as it can be seen in the Airedale Terrier picture, is short and well-muscled. The neck should be tapering towards the shoulders, with no skin folds. The shoulders are long, with flat shoulder blades; the ribs are well sprung. The chest should be deep enough to reach the elbows. The legs should be well-muscled and well-boned. Feet of the Airedale Terrier are small, round and well-cushioned, with arched toes. The tail is set high on the back. The tail should be carried gaily, but not curled. A docked tail is no longer a must in the Airedale Terrier. The coat of this breed is hard, dense and wiry, with a soft undercoat. The whole body and legs of the dog should be covered equally with hair. The coat color should be black or dark grizzle on the body; the legs, head and ears are usually tan. Some bloodlines have a white blaze on the chest.

The breed standard concerns not only the dogs’ conformation, but also their temperament. Airedale Terriers should be courageous, protective, loyal, intelligent and friendly, always ready to please the owner. They excel in defense dog trials, obedience and conformation. Some dogs of this breed tend to be dominating and hyperactive, which may be corrected by consistent training. Without enough exercise to burn off their energy, Airedale Terriers may become neurotic and restless. If you cannot devote much time to the pet, don’t buy an Airedale Terrier, but consider another breed that doesn’t need much attention. When making a decision on purchasing a pet of this breed, don’t rely on the Airedale Terrier picture, but learn much on the breed and talk to breeders and owners.
