Airedale Terrier Puppy

Prior to purchasing a purebred Airedale Terrier puppy, it is useful to read much on the breed to make sure the dog is the right pet for you and you are the right owner for the dog. Airedale Terriers are the largest among terriers. According to the breed standard, males stand up to 24 inches at the withers and females are up to 23 inches at the withers. Airedale Terriers have a harsh wiry coat, which is resistant to dampness, and a soft undercoat. This breed is an average shedder and needs regular brushing and stripping, especially for the show ring.

It’s very important to provide an Airedale Terrier puppy with early socialization and expose it to various people and situations. Being large and agile, these dogs can play rough and are not recommended as pets for small children. Airedale Terriers need to feel loved and respected. They should not be kept in the yard, but should live indoors as family members. Being natural born hunters, Airedale Terriers are easily distracted by a chipmunk, cat, or other small running creature. It needs an experienced trainer to get an Airedale Terrier to come away from a potential prey. With the right owner and handler, a dog of this breed can easily succeed in many dog sports, including defense dog trials, agility, and obedience.

Every Airedale Terrier puppy is playful and fun-loving. It requires a strong hand to make Airedale Terriers reliable and obedient. The owner has to use a natural desire of the Airedale Terrier puppy to run and play and make training sessions interesting and variable. Boring repetitive exercises do nothing but harm to this breed. Airedales always strive to please people, but can be abusive to other dogs. It’s not recommended to obtain a second dog, if you have an adult Airedale Terrier. Though, if raised together, Airedale Terriers do well with other dogs and even with cats.

This breed is very intelligent, but it needs a delicate approach. If an Airedale Terrier refuses to do something, it usually means that he understands the requirements, but doesn’t want to obey because he’s bored. Many Airedale Terriers see family members as submissive and have dominance challenges towards the owner and other people. This is the main reason why many pets of this breed are surrendered to rescues. Though it’s not difficult to train an Airedale Terrier puppy, it requires a considerable amount of time, knowledge and creativity.
